Laissez Faire – The idea - Laissez Faire (hands off) is a management approach and has also been used to describe a style of economics.

It's really about allowing others more freedom in decision making, so people take responsibility for their actions. So this idea - being responsible - should work at laybyes, right? Yes, see video truck driver.

About: The author of this publication has travelled all over UK and visited a lot of laybyes. He wants to get the opinions of other motorists. He also want to find out if laybyes in your area could be improved. leave a comment..

Cutting the verges -
Don't you think the council should clear the litter before the grass is cut? This looks like a lack of co-operation between the council, who are responsible for clearing litter and perhaps Kent Highway Services. Kent County Council's highways arm, handle local highway matters. These include street lighting, repairing pot holes, pavements, dropped kerb applications, grass verge cutting, road closures, highway drainage and culverts, bollards, salting roads, snow clearance and highways safety schemes.

Desperate

This is an example of Desperate Truck drivers in action:

Dave: A local lorry driver said:

"life if hellish for truck-drivers trying to find a layby..especially when taking a break from shifting sand, there's simply no space anymore.."

Modern Truck Cabs are mostly fully equipped

However this doesn't mean that truck drivers can do without a stop, after all they are human too.

    What do truck driver's want?
  • They need space to rest their rigs and their bodies
  • They need fuel to fill up their rigs
  • They need to fill their tyres with air
  • Drivers need to get some shut-eye for their journey ahead

What's not essential for a modern truck driver
  • Drivers often carry their own chemical toilets
  • Modern truck cabs have fully equipped kitchens
  • Truck drivers sometimes carry spare fuel

That definition is not exhaustive and I could go on...

Modern Big-truck cabs are self-contained
This means they can cook for themselves on a long journey
Drivers also tend to snack-a-lot
They may even resort to fast-food now and again!

This could lead to a build of trash in the cab?
A build up of litter, plastic containers and left overs would need to be disposed of

If there are no bins, truck drivers will just dump their litter, fly-tipping style!

This report from Caterham..December 10 2025:

A truck driver was seen dumping a load of rubbish at a layby on the A22 Caterham bypass.
The driver claimed there were no bins available at this layby, so he had no choice but to
dump his rubbish. This is a serious offence.

Fly-tipping!

The growth of dense shrubs lends towards clandestine flytipping practises. CCTV surveilance is imperitive to catch offenders.
Flytipping is an offence. In addition more bins must be installed. Warning signs errected to deter flytippers.
'They must be prosecuted'. See what's lurking in the bushes..

At this Caterham layby, parking restictions have been snubbed..

This parking sign has been vandalised and tossed aside,
obviously to flout time regulations.
